The recent arrival of the Telstra NextG network
has come as a relief to those seeking decent bandwidth
communications across the country for conducting digital business -
in addition to telephony.
Parallels with DRCS
The turning on of the Telstra NextG service can
be regarded on a par with the implementation of the Digital Radio
Concentrator System DRCS and HCRC networks in the 1980s and 1990s.
New Capabilities & Opportunities
Whilst many people are still coming to grips
with the benefits and capabilities such a network delivers (it often
takes time even for the designers to appreciate its capability), the
signs are that it can deliver bandwidth and services over distances
not previous seen anywhere else in the world.
Initial Cost Impediments
The only word that may be said against it is
the cost of the data services, though it is fair to say in this
defence that the network has surely cost a lot of money to be
implemented - especially when considering the actual geographical
coverage it provides.
Competition
Unfortunately it is difficult to see how any
other organisation can combat this effort and therefore provide the
same type of service, although continuing reductions in the cost of
the electronics is likely to see this capability being matched at
some time in the future.
As this develops there will be a corresponding
relaxation in the cost of services as competition settles into
place. Nevertheless the work done by Telstra is to be applauded.
